Prof. Dr. Steffen Fleßa is head of the Department of Health Care Management at the University of Greifswald, Germany. After his training in business administration (focus on health care management) he gained practical experience in Tanzania for five years. Later he was research assistant at the department of medical economics, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. Further steps in his career were a professorship of nursing administration (Evang. University of Applied Sciences Nuremberg), professorship of international health economics (Medical School, University of Heidelberg) and full professor of health care management at the University of Greifswald. He was dean of studies, vice dean of the faculty of law and economics and vice rector of the University.

His main research interests are in the field of quantitative modelling, health care management and non-profit management in Germany as well as in low and middle-income countries. He has research and working experience in Tanzania, Kenya, Burkina Faso, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. He has published more than 400 books and papers in national and international journals.
