Professor Pavlo Fedirko studied medicine, specialising in ophthalmology, biochemistry and physiology. Degree of Doctor of Philosophy received in 1991 (Research Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy named after acad. V. Filatov, Odessa) for research in the field of biochemistry of the eye and medical methods of glaucoma treatment. Since 1991 his area of interest is radiation ophthalmology, epidemiology of radiation damage, radiation medicine. Dr. habil. med received in 2003 at the Institute of Occupational Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Kyiv. Full professor since 2014.
Professor Fedirko is the founder of the Laboratory of Radiation Induced Eyes Diseases of the Institute of Radiation Hygiene and Epidemiology. Since 2017 he is the Director of the Institute of Radiation Hygiene and Epidemiology of the National Research Center of Radiation Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
Academic work of P. Fedirko is interdisciplinary in nature. The main research activities are focused on radiation epidemiology of non-infectious diseases, radiation medicine, dosimetry of external and internal radiation, retrospective dosimetry, radiochemistry. He has been involved in international projects, aslo in Ukrainian-American Chornobyl ocular study (UACOS). Pavlo Fedirko discovered several previously unknown effects of radiation exposure, in particular he described two ophthalmological syndromes, for the first time he discovered a radiation-induced dose dependent decrease in accommodation capacity (the first evidence of the effect of radiation shortening life expectancy, not related to the development of cancer), dose dependent disorders of permanent retinal potential generation in irradiated persons. He paid a lot of attention to the peculiarities of the course of age-dependent diseases in populations exposed to radiation.
